I felt that firsthand standing in front of my closet before a family trip, aggressively tossing through options that didn't feel like me: some too cheeky, and some that I'd bought out of desperation for previous family vacations that looked like something my grandma wouldn't even wear. And that's because she didn't have to, she had options.

Almost every time I visit my grandmother, she pulls out her old albums to show me what her life looked like when she was around my age, in her 20s. On one visit, she flipped to a page of her and her friends standing beside each other at the beach, Lake Michigan glistening behind them.
